Highway honors veterans

Wednesday, November 8, 2006

Dear Editor,

Nov. 11, 2000, The Nebraska Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Highway 83 was designated by Gov. Mike Johanns. Signs are at the South Dakota and Kansas borders and two are at each county line along "83."

Those counties are Red Willow, Frontier, Lincoln, Logan, Thomas, and Cherry. The Nebraska Department of Roads, those six counties' commissioners and the VFW were responsible for the purchase and placement of the signs before they were erected.

Nov. 11, 2006, is the sixth anniversary of the designation of this Nebraska highway, the first state along the National Highway 83 to receive this designation. The Nebraska Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Highway 83 Association promotes small businesses along the "83" corridor while honoring Veterans every day.

Take "your" veteran for a drive up this scenic route on Veterans Day and have his/her picture taken by one or all the signs along this 223 mile route and check out the Web site: http://www.veteransmemorialhighway83.com

Happy Veterans Day
