Victim released from hospital, still suffers from injuries

Saturday, October 7, 2006

A McCook man who was attacked with a baseball bat and suffered severe head injuries has been released from the hospital, relatives said.

Darren Peters, 41, was allegedly assaulted Sept. 19 by Brandon Carlock, 20, and Eric Pittman, 19, both of McCook.

According to police records, Peters had multiple skull fractures and was flown to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Carlock and Pittman were charged with first degree assault and use of a deadly weapon, Class III felonies, with a $100,000 cash bond.

Pittman's bond was posted by a relative; Carlock is still in custody.

Both will be arraigned in Red Willow County District Court Nov. 6.

According to a witness statement, Carlock started arguing with a neighbor of Peters about the ownership of a dog. Peters tried to intervene on behalf of the neighbor and the fight escalated. The witness told authorities that Pittman came from behind, struck Peters with a bat and continued to strike him although he had collapsed on the ground. At that point, the witness stated, she threw herself over his body to stop the attack.

Peters survived the assault despite three skull fractures, said his mother Pat Peters. He is doing as well as can be expected, although he has trouble speaking and suffers from daily headaches. He is scheduled for a CT scan in the near future.
