Letter to the Editor

3rd District Issue

Thursday, July 27, 2006

Dear Editor,

Recently, my husband and I attended a public meeting at the Biéroc Café in McCook, held for the Democratic candidate for governor, David Hahn. After a brief chat with Mr. Hahn, we were hoping for a debate between he and Gov. Heineman, to be held somewhere close by, that could serve several surrounding counties.

Since Mr. Hahn had never been contacted or invited to debate in McCook, he could not rightfully be a guest speaker! The debate is questionable at this time.

We hope that it can be rescheduled when Mr. Heineman can agree to more than three debates because you see, that leaves the 3rd District -- largely without representation -- and they do pay taxes!

It is well known that many meetings, educational and otherwise are held in Kearney. That only being a couple of hours from here, people from the Sandhills area were driving before the chickens got up, and then the long drive home.

It seemed that nothing existed west of Kearney. I think Mr. Heineman should know that there is land west and north of McCook, the rest of the 3rd District.

Many of those people, with the price of gas, road construction and other hardships won't make it to the State Fair to hear a debate.

Is it asking too much of our governor to "haul his plank" to a few remote rural areas? Could it be that Gov. Heineman thinks he is more secure with a self proclaimed cease fire? What ever happened to E for Effort?

Sincerely,

Virginia Schaffert

Culbertson
