Letter to the Editor

Only one opposed

Friday, May 12, 2006

Dear Editor,

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but has our current school board gone insane? My facts may not be exactly correct but I believe they are close.

Two weeks ago the board voted to purchase a computer program at a cost of nearly $100,000 so the parents of students could keep a closer look on the development and achievements of their children. What happened to parents meeting with teachers every 6 weeks? Diane Lyons was the only member who voted against this.

This week the board has voted to spend over $38,000 to add nine sports programs to McCook Junior High. Does this amount cover diesel fuel at $3 a gallon for transportation for the new programs? Again, Diane Lyons was the only one who voted no.

To add insult to injury they then voted to add a $34,730 increase to the District Business Manager's job. This means they will have to hire someone to take over the job of activities director. What will the cost of that be? Once more, Diane Lyons was the only objector.

Where is the money going to come from for these expenditures? Is it already in your budget? Perhaps you could publicly answer this question.

I would have to research all of the campaign slogans and speeches all the school board members made when they were running for the school board but I would imagine most of them promised to spend the tax payers money responsibly. I don't believe they have in these matters.

Thank you Diane Lyons for standing up for the tax payers of McCook.

Respectfully,

Larry Richards

McCook
