Letter to the Editor

Tradition returns

Tuesday, April 4, 2006

Dear Editor,

A 30-year summer tradition in McCook has been reborn. This rebirth has occurred because of the gracious generosity of the citizens of our area.

As a celebration of our American freedoms, the McCook Optimist Club will once again take up the torch started by the McCook Elks Club in the '70s, and sponsor a Community Fourth of July Fireworks Display.

The community response to this has been so overwhelming. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

The huge crowd that gathered around the Red Willow County Fairgrounds last summer was treated to a beautiful and exciting display. The success of the 2005 show was truly a result of a community-wide commitment.

So many people and organizations gave so graciously of their time and money, that we the McCook Optimist Club, were humbled by it. This has become a true community-wide project.

The kickoff for this year's event has begun. In the coming days, you will see us initiate several fund raising programs to help us gather the estimated $5,500 needed to satisfy the contract with our chosen contractor, Stonebraker Fireworks.

The McCook Volunteer Fire Department recently got our fundraising started with last weekend's successful chili feed. Thanks, folks!

Also proving their community spirit, the Pizza Hut will be holding benefit pizza buffets coming up on April 6, May 17 and June 28 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

A portion of the sales from each evening's buffet will be donated to the McCook Optimist Club Community Fireworks fund. Hope to see you and your families there.

As the spring days turn toward summer, please consider this project in your giving. We ask that you watch for and support our fund-raising programs for what we know will be an awe-inspiring community fireworks display.

You can also send your personal donations and suggestions to:
