Stand up for prayer

Thursday, March 30, 2006

Dear Editor,

I applaud Jean Lacey, Mary V. Horendeck and Pat Redfern for having the courage to uphold the need for prayer before County board meetings. Their comments on 3-23-06, 3-13-06 and 3-27-06 were right on the money! We also need men to protest on behalf of prayer before civil meetings.

Last year, Wilsonville board members rejected my motion for prayer to the God of the Universe before town board meetings. I was not surprised when someone brought up the notion of church and state, everyone quaked.

What I was surprised about was that our Christian board members did not vote for their God-given and constitutional right to pray as Americans!

Those who oppose prayer before governmental bodies will be chagrined to learn that every Nebraska State Unicameral session begins with prayer from a different Christian Minister who represents a different Senator's district. Over the years, many Senators have offered prayers. Senators still pray on any given occasion.

This poses a dilemma for the anti-prayer believers! Is there confusion in the ranks of those who will not champion the issue for much needed prayer in the wicked times we live in or is it sheer cowardice?

I submit it is both with a heavy leaning on the latter.
