Indian Creek

Dear Editor,

This is the clearest blue stream that pours in to the Republican River.

It will soon die as the irrigation is started up and I hope it comes back next fall, as some of the streams are now gone forever. West of McCook, it would seem like a mountain stream, and is nothing short of amazing. There are a number of stone age camps along its winding water and dugouts of homesteaders, plus a cave for saving ice during the winter that would keep food safe in the family ice box.

It also had a farm-made dam that allowed fishing and swimming back in the 1920s but was washed out in the 1930s.

This is a great time of year to walk, with permission, and plant herbs along these streams for harvest next fall.

There are also few snakes and bugs to bother one on walks this time of year, and for 99 cents you can keep the biggest meanest kitty at a safe distance.

Bill Donze
