Letter to the Editor

Great memories

Thursday, January 12, 2006

Dear Editor,

My wife, Jo, and I have had several conversations about our experiences in McCook these past five years.

From the very first we have enjoyed and been impressed with the exceptional quality of service and kindness from the McCook merchants.

The afternoon of my job interview with the City Council I noticed I had forgotten to pack a tie. I frantically dashed into Garrison's Store for Men and was sold "the lucky tie." I was kindly told it must have some red in it because this was Nebraska. The folks at D&S Hardware helped us get settled in soon after we moved when we realized our refrigerator was too big and the house had no oven/range.

We have pleasant memories of the services and kindnesses from the floral shop, the post office, Eakes, the shoe store, all the restaurants, the specialty shops, the theater, the pharmacy, the barber and hair dressers, the banks, the library, the service stations, the paint store, the lumber stores, the grocery stores -- was there really a place called "Hinky-Dinky?" -- and the list goes on and on. Thank you for so many pleasant experiences!

We both feel blessed to have worked with good co-workers! The care and commitment -- perhaps this is part of the Nebraska work ethic -- has been impressive and enjoyable. We have learned a great deal from you.

And to those who went out of their way to become our friends: thank you for your many kindnesses and patience with us. We have grown to love you.

We will long remember the story of how the local dentists in town -- by donating their weekly "day off" to the practice of a fellow dentist who was suffering a terminal illness -- kept his office running and an income coming to his family for about a year until he passed away.

And since the time of the news of our moving, we both have had several kind expressions of appreciation and best wishes. The kind words and good wishes have exceeded that of any other community where we have lived. For that, we thank you.

In closing, whenever we drink a glass of water or hear a fire, police or ambulance whistle, we will be reminded of our time with you in McCook, Nebraska.

Thank you,

John Bingham
