Drive under way to rebuild skate park

Friday, December 9, 2005

Dear Editor,

In 2002, the City of McCook abandoned an existing tennis court that was constructed in the 1950s in Kelley Park. The city then purchased and installed skate park equipment in this area.

The skate park equipment was manufactured out of a wood by-product. In 2004, the equipment deteriorated to the point of being unsafe. The city determined it would be in the best interest of the skateboarders to remove the equipment rather than risk injury.

When the skate park was in place, it was very popular. Although there were no objections to the removal of the unsafe equipment, there were still several calls and visits by parents, as well as youth, to city hall asking how they could assist in rebuilding the park.

Thanks to their efforts, the city is now applying for grant funding through the Tony Hawk Foundation.

The McCook City Council has approved the replacement of the skate park equipment and budgeted $15,000 for this equipment. This equipment, when purchased, will be installed at Kelley Park.

The skateboarders, parents and city staff have been formally meeting to discuss fund raisers, design, maintenance, prevention of vandalism and other pertinent issues. The skate park, as well as other recreational facilities within McCook, will provide a healthy and positive recreation opportunity for our youth.

We appreciate you taking the time to consider a contribution to the Operation McCook Skate Park Replacement Fund. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (308) 345-2352 or Darcy Eckhardt at the city offices, (308) 345-2022 ext. 230
