Letter to the Editor

Never forgotten

Friday, November 4, 2005

Dear Editor,

The passing of Nadine Stramel was noticed in the recent Bison Alumni newsletter, and online obituary.

The young men of Red Willow County registered for selective service during the Vietnam era before lottery numbers and the ending of the draft, faced certain induction into the armed services.

I would like to comment on Nadine, clerk of the "draft board" and contact person available for questions or assistance during those traumatic years.

Mailing induction notices, and their result each month, had to be stressful and unpleasant, to say the least. Nadine performed her duties with compassion, empathy, professionalism, and without social commentary.

As the son of a career naval Pearl Harbor survivor, Pacific Theater and Korean War veteran, avoiding only two years service was not an option. Nadine's assistance at the beginning of those two years will never be forgotten.
