Congrats to Unit

Dear Editor,

On Oct. 21, 2005, McDonald Ryan Unit No. 276, American Legion Auxiliary, Danbury, officially reached 100 percent Goal with 26 members.

Congratulations to Unit President Patsy Lee Redfern, Unit Membership Chairman Joyce Weyeneth and all the members for this great accomplishment. It is not an easy task but these members prove it can be done. Looking back at the Unit's history they have had an "All-Time High" membership of 53.

Noting that they are now at 26, with each member signing up a new member, they could be at their "All-Time High" again. Where would they find new members? Perhaps right in the Community of Danbury.

Any female relative (mother, sister, spouse, dau-ghter, granddaughter, great grandmother or grandmother) of a veteran who served during World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Panama, Grenada, Lebanon and Persian Gulf War/Iraqi Freedom is eligible to join the American Legion Auxiliary.

If the veteran of eligibility is still living, he or she must be a current paid member of The American Legion. If the Veteran of eligibility is deceased, he or she did not have to have been a member of The American Legion. Additionally, any female Veteran having served under the above guidelines is eligible for a dual membership in the The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary based on her own service dates.

Local American Legion Auxiliary Units are all volunteer members who give hundreds if not thousands of hours to the community, children and youth, Veterans in their own homes, Veterans facilities or local nursing homes.

Additionally, scholarships are available on local level (at discretion of the local Unit), Department (state) level and National level for qualified students with a Veteran connection. Units host blood drives, Poppy Distribution Days, dinners, Americanism contests, Girls State and more on the local level, showing that they are indeed a very visible and viable entity to the local community.

They assist other organizations as well as their own by lending support in any way they are able.

So, indeed, becoming a member of the American Legion Auxiliary brings members into all avenues of the community and they are willing to assist when and wherever possible.

Why not give the members of Unit 276 -- Danbury an opportunity to assist and see that truly "Community in small towns build Hometown." The Unit joins Beaver City Unit 28 in being Goal in District Nine.
