Letter to the Editor

USMC birthday

Wednesday, October 26, 2005

Dear Editor,

Thursday, Nov. 10 will be the 230th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. In 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the formation of two Marine battalions. They made their first landing on the Bahamas in 1776 during the Revolutionary War and have been active in nearly every conflict since that time.

The U.S.M.C. has a strong tradition of celebrating its birthday with Marines and former Marines. For these past five years, we have had a birthday party in this area that has been attended by 25-30 former Marines, several active Marines and friends and spouses.

This year, we have made arrangements to have dinner at Sehnert's Bieroc Café on 312 Norris Ave. in McCook. We plan to celebrate a day early, on Wednesday, Nov. 9, due to scheduling conflicts on the 10th. Dinner will be at 6:30 p.m. but plan to come at 5:30 if you want to share photos, tell stories and socialize. After dinner, we will have a speaker, Jeff Tidyman, who is in the Marine Corps Reserves. Jeff will share slides of his Iraq experience. We also will have a reading of the Commandant's annual message.

If you plan to attend, please call Sehnert's Bieroc Café (345-6500) directly to make your reservations.

Call us if you have any questions or suggestions.

Semper Fi,

Duane Tappe,

(308) 345-7650

Dan Stramel,
