Huskers fight through 11 innings of play

Wednesday, June 22, 2005

Whether watching on television, listening on the radio or screaming in the stands at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraskans joined in pride and support Tuesday for the all-out effort put forth by the University of Nebraska baseball team.

In what is already being called one of the greatest games in College World Series history, the Huskers fought back, only to see their hopes dashed when the Devils tallied a run in the 11th inning.

Despite the disappointment of seeing the Huskers eliminated from the college championship series, Nebraska fans were not mad or sad. Instead, they were beaming with pride and praise for the Huskers' valiant effort.

These young competitors captivated the state with the best season's record in university history. With 57 victories and 15 losses, the Huskers climbed to as high as second in the college baseball rankings.

With their success, the Nebraska baseball players and coaches gave the entire state something to cheer about. That was sorely needed, as the Big Red spirit had been shaken in the past year by mediocre football and basketball seasons.

But -- just as the Husker volleyball team did last fall -- the Nebraska baseball team brought national attention and respect to the state. One of the many good things about Tuesday night's game was that it was televised nationally. ESPN's coverage turned out to be a wonderful showcase for Nebraska's wholesome ... and whole-hearted ... support for intercollegiate athletics.

Even in defeat, Nebraska players, coaches and fans were good sports. We hope that quality came through in the national telecast. We also hope that the baseball team's inspirational season -- and the statewide fan support it generated-- carry forward in a renewed commitment to quality and excellence throughout the state.

Much is wrong with athletics in America. Scandals about steroid use and lawlessness dot the headlines. But sports can and should have a wholesome and uplifting effect on the athletes and those who encourage and support them.

Our hats are off to the Husker baseball team and their statewide supporters. With season-long success and the valiant effort at the College World Series, the Big Red has reminded us of the pride and joy which results when young athletes give their all in the pursuit of excellence.
