WAUNETA -- Virgil E. Sandman, 88, died Thursday (June 9, 2005), at the Chase County Hospital in Imperial.

He was born Feb. 19, 1917, to Ralph and Gertrude Sandman in Harbine. He moved with his family Wauneta in 1934 and graduated from Wauneta High School in 1935.

After graduation, he worked in California, but returned to Nebraska to farm.

He enlisted in the Navy on Aug. 12, 1942, and was discharged on Dec. 23, 1945.

He married Eda Marie Snoke on Oct. 6, 1946.

He was a member of the Wauneta School board, the Palisade Soil and Water Conservation District, the Farmer's Coop Exchange, FFA Charter, served as a 4-H leader, and was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson Andrew; five brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Eda of Wauneta; two sons, Nik and wife, Colleen of Wauneta, and Kirk and wife, Cindy of Wauneta; two daughters, Cindy West of Lincoln and Melody and husband, Mike Kenney of Lincoln; one brother, Charles Sandman of Benkelman; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Sandman of Salem, Ore., and Onna Sandman of Cambridge; one brother-in-law, Bill Neverve of Kansas City, Kan.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services were today at 11 a.m., at the Christian Faith Outreach Church in Imperial with the Rev. Glen Kline and the Rev. JR Kline officiating. Interment was at the Riverside Cemetery in Wauneta.

Liewer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangments.
