OBERLIN -- Rhomine E. Smith, 97, died Thursday (May 12, 2005), at the Decatur County Hospital in Oberlin.

He was born Dec. 7, 1907 to Rolly and Ivy (Smith) Bishop in a sod house in Rawlins County. He was raised on a Decatur county farm and attended school in Dresden.

He served in the Army during World War II.

He married Ila Foley on Dec. 25, 1939, in Kanona, Kan. They made their home in Kanona and on a farm north of Dresden in 1947. They moved to Oberlin in 2003. He was a farmer and rancher.

He was a member of the Methodist Church in Kanona.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ila (Foley) Smith; two brothers, Lawrence and Jim Smith; and sister, Rhea Flaska.

Survivors include one son, Eldon Smith and wife, Shelley of Phillipsburg; one daughter, Garrah and husband, Vernon Thornburgh of Crete; one sister, Arlee Williams of Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Doug Hasty officiating. Internment will follow at the Oberlin Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday from 1-8 p.m. and Monday from 8 a.m. to time of service.

A memorial fund has been set up to the Decatur County Hospital.
