The McCook High School girls tennis team opened the season Tuesday against Hastings at the Bison courts.

The duel was called early because of lightning.

McCook tennis coach Matt Wiemers said he was pleased with the way his team played in the first meet of the season.

"The team played well for the first matches of the season," Wiemers said. "Hastings is a preseason pick to contend for the title at state, but the team played with a lot of confidence and didn't let them intimidate them.

"It was unfortunate we had to call the last two matches, as we only needed one of the two to win the duel. But we got to see how well we measure up to the competition and found out what areas we need to work on."

"I was pleased with how well our doubles teams played," Wiemers said. "Kim and Tausha picked up where they left off last season and played some great tennis.

"They hit the ball well and placed some excellent shots. They need to play more aggressively at the net, and put pressure on their opponents.

"Jennifer and Natalie had a great match, considering that was their first match playing together. I like how well they played together and the way they compliment one another.

"They both are aggressive at the net and place the ball where they need to. They have the potiential to develop into a solid doubles team.

"Angela had a good singles match and picked up an impressive win. She did a great job of limiting errors and putting pressure on her opponent to commit unforced errors. She will need to hit her first serve more consistently, but her ground strokes were good.

"And she got to the net when she needed to, which got her some easy points. Overall the team looked good, but there are many areas we will need to get better. We have high expectations for the season, but the girls will need to improve with every practice and every match to attain those expectations."

The McCook JV won 15 of the 20 matches played.

"With the girls we had returning from last season and the new freshman class this year," Wiemers said. "I knew we would have some excellent talent on the team. The girls have worked hard and it showed today by how dominating they played.

"We have a lot of girls out, but everyone got to play a match. I'm very thankful to them for their understanding and dedication to the situation we are in. With limited courts available and the high number of girls participating, they have done a super job. The future years to come should be promising, if they continue to work at improving their fundamentals.

"Coach Michaelis and coach Howard are doing a tremendous job of working with the team. They have a lot of experience and are passing that along to the girls. I appreciate their efforts to develop the team where we want them to be.
