Letter to the Editor

Middle ground

Tuesday, March 29, 2005

Dear Editor,

As I sit here following the ongoing saga of dueling demagoguery betwixt the "Religious Right" (tm) and the "Godless Communists" (tm), it occurs to me that maybe, just perhaps, there might be some middle ground here.

A radical concept occurs to me: what if each side could have half of what they wanted? What if the "Religious Right" could be guaranteed the right to freely exercise whatever religion they choose? What if the "Godless Communists" could be promised that Congress would make no laws which would impose an "official" religion upon them?

I would think that such a mutually beneficial arrangement should suffice to eliminate the perceived need for BOTH sides to continue to browbeat an audience the overwhelming majority of which falls into one of two diverse categories:

a) the choir (as in "preaching to")

or

b) the opposition (as in "my mind's made up, don't confuse me with the facts")

Hey ... what if someone had come up with that idea a couple of centuries ago?

Sincerely,

Owen J. McPhillips

McCook
