Letter to the Editor

Research first

Friday, March 4, 2005

Dear Editor,

And members of the Middle Republican Natural Resources District:

It appears the wellfield to serve Bartley, Indianola and Cambridge will become a reality.

My request to the NRD board is that you insist that approximately 600 acres of irrigated land be turned back to dryland in the immediate area.

I base this request on the amount of water used in the 2004 year in the three towns involved.

These are as follows:

Indianola 60 million gallons.

Bartley 65 million gallons.

Cambridge 102 million gallons.

Total: 227,000,000 total gallons.

Cambridge has not been using this water on their golf course and do not intend to use this "new water" for this purpose, either.

600 acres of irrigated land limited to the new 13-inch per acre allotment would use 211,803,000 gallons per year of total water.

Everyone who is familiar with this proposed wellfield area knows how narrow and limited this vein of water really is.

There is probably no way of stopping this ridiculous expenditure of government funds.

The average resident in these towns hasn't bothered to research the health hazards, "if any," of using the present water supply. They seemed to be brain-washed, paranoid, or whatever you want to call it.

The following is a quote from a letter I received from the State Department of Health, Feb.23, 2005:

Age adjusted rates for bladder, prostate, lung and bronchial cancers are:

Six-county area: 132.3 per 100,000 population.

State of Nebraska: 152.5 per 100,000 population.

I find this every interesting. I wish people would research some of these mandates handed down by the Federal Government before they jump to these ridiculous decisions.

Respectfully,

Eldon Moore,

McCook
