Supports ban

Wednesday, January 12, 2005

Dear Editor,

According to the Grolier Encyclopedia, nicotine is an extremely poisonous alkaloid, present in tobacco leaves. Nicotine can be produced in quantity from tobacco scraps, and is used as a pesticide. Two or three drops (less than 50 mg.) of the pure nicotine alkaloid placed on the tongue is rapidly fatal to an adult. Nicotine is also highly addictive.

"Secondhand" smoke from cigarettes and cigars causes lung cancer for non-smoking bystanders.

I was addicted to cigarettes for more than 30 years and by the grace of God, I was able to stop smoking in 1991. Freedom from addition is much more pleasant than the addiction. Because of my personal experience, I agree totally concerning the ban on smoking in public places in Lincoln and numerous other areas.

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine asked me if I wanted to go have a drink. I replied (and I quote Dr. Adrian Rogers) "No thanks, I'm already happy and I want to stay that way."

Actually, the last time I had a drink was 1979. When I stopped drinking, all of my problems didn't disappear, but all my problems associated with alcohol disappeared instantly.

There is so much promotion of smoking and drinking, I thank you for giving me the opportunity to present the other side.

Sincerely,

George R. Anderson,

McCook
