Getting off eash

Tuesday, January 11, 2005

Dear Editor,

I can't understand how the railroad leaked 3-5 million gallons of diesel fuel from its tanks and no one noticed ["City takes BNSF offer (http://www. mccook gazette.com/story/1080801.html)"]...

Let's see, if I was paying a dollar a gallon and I lost 3 million gallons, I would certainly want to know where on earth it was going.

I would also want to take drastic steps to make sure I didn't loose any more! It wouldn't take me years to think about, ponder and wonder. I'd be on it right away. Something is seriously wrong here.

It sounds to me like the railroad is getting off pretty easy here. They should not only pay for the relocation of the storage facility, they should also pay for the wells, and the pipeline from the new wells, wherever they may end up. The good people of McCook shouldn't be paying for the railroads mistakes and lack of oversight.

By accepting the $3 million from BNSF, isn't the city tying one hand behind its back legally?

My two cents...
