Special season in the Golden Plains

Monday, December 13, 2004

Join us as we lift our voices in praise and appreciation for the many good people of the Golden Plains. Let's say special words of thanks to:

CHRISTINA HOUGHTELLING, who represented the Southwest Nebraska area with competitive class on the national volleyball scene. Especially poignant was Christina's post-game interview following the Nebraska Cornhuskers' loss to the University of Southern California in the finals of volleyball's Elite Eight. While fighting back tears, Christina spoke of her pride in the Huskers for their season-long show of excellence.

TOY BOX SPONSORS, who once again have brightened Christmas for hundreds of youngsters in the Tri-State Region. An estimated 400 youth turned out for Sunday's Toy Distribution at the National Guard Armory, with all the bikes, trikes and wagons given to the kids.

DUANE TAPPE, for coming up with the idea of the Teddy Bear Tribute to McCook Coach Ron Coleman, who died tragically in a fall from his roof.

Ten dozen Teddy bears were given in Coach Coleman's honor at the McCook National Bank collection point, and another 80 Teddy bears were donated directly to the Toy Box.

THE ARAPAHOE WARRIORS, who captured both the boys and girls titles in the Cattle Trail Classic basketball tournament in McCook. The Warrior girls defeated the Hayes Center Cardinals, 53-44, to win the girls championship, and the Arapahoe boys downed the Southwest Roughriders, to take home the boys' trophy.

WORK ETHIC OFFENDERS, who are doing a great number of good things as part of their work requirement. Their efforts have been exceedingly beneficial during the holiday season, as they helped with toy restoration for the Toy Box, and put up the Christmas decorations for Santa Claus Lane.

CHRISTMAS DECORATORS, who have brought delight to their friends and neighbors with their colorful and creative holiday scenes. It's true in the residential areas, the rural countryside and in the business sections of towns throughout the region. Because of the decorators' efforts, all of us have a heightened awareness of this most special of seasons.
