Support Legion

Thursday, October 28, 2004

Dear Editor,

After being secretary for the Red Willow County American legion/Auxiliary four consecutive years, I handed the books over to the McCook American Legion and Auxiliary who will serve as Officers for the 2005/2006 years.

Our Oct. 26 County meeting was held in Bartley with only 18 members present -- I thought HOW SAD that only 18 persons in Red Willow County are interested enough to attend only two meetings per year to keep the organization alive.

As well as promoting patriotism we sponsor many activities for children, Boy and Girl State as well as County Government Day.

Most members of our local American Legion, VFW & Auxiliaries are getting old and it is hard for us to carry on these important duties. In this tragic time and with so many of the baby boomers children serving our country, I would ask that if they are eligible to belong to a service organization that they join and participate.

My late husband joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He said he cried most nights for a long time- this is the way it was for most of our World War II and Vietnam service men and women, who served to help preserve our Freedom.

My husband and I both realized how important it was to promote patriotism and tried to do our part. My husband was a member of the American legion and VFW for many years.

I have been a continuous member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 39 years. Two years ago I retired from the election Board after serving 40 years, of which I am very proud.

I am asking that the younger people take over these important responsibilities to help promote Freedom before we older ones are all gone and it is too late.

Also-Please VOTE on Nov. 2nd.
