Letter to the Editor

Mystery picture

Tuesday, October 26, 2004

Dear Editor,

My name is Larry Claassen. I live in Lincoln and many years ago I came to McCook on several occasions to play at a local club with a band called "Footloose."

We played at a bar across the street from the cemetery north of town, I don't recall the name offhand.

The reason I'm writing is to ask if you would be interested in a minor quest of mine to get some information about an antique photo I bought in Indianola in about 1980.

I have attached a scan of it. As you can see it is a young girl whose picture was taken at a McCook studio, I'm guessing around the 1920s or '30s.

Some members of my band had to go to the bus stop in Indianola to pick up a component for our sound system that we were having shipped in from Lincoln. We got to the bus stop a little early so we killed some time by going into an antique store nearby.

I found this photo in a box full of postcards and pictures and was captivated by it. It has been on my bookcase for many years in various homes and I have always wondered whose picture it is.

I am wondering if you would be interested in helping with a little research in the form of a human interest story.

Perhaps you could print the picture and story this winter in an edition that needs a little filler and see if you get a response from the locals. I would be fascinated to learn anything at all about her since I'm a bit of a rural history fan. I could give you an interview with more details and my reasons for being interested if you think it would be entertaining for your readers.

Thank you for your time.

Larry Claassen
