Golfer shows her strength in adversity

Wednesday, October 13, 2004

Even when adversity strikes, you have to keep your head, re-focus and go forward. That is the inspiration provided by McCook High School senior Katherine Morell, who Tuesday captured her second-straight Class B individual state championship in girls golf.

On Monday, the first day of the two-day state tournament in Grand Island, Katherine was sailing along at a near-par pace. Then on the ninth hole, disaster struck. Her drive faded into the trees and her recovery shot settled in the deep rough, magnifying her troubles. She ended up taking a four-over par 9 on the par 5 hole at Indianhead Golf Course.

A major disappointment? Yes. But Katherine didn't let it get her down. She finished the first round with a six-over par 78, one stroke behind the first day leader, Betsy Conry of Omaha Duchesne.

But the big turnaround came Tuesday on the final day of the tournament. Showing what it takes to be a true champion, Katherine battled back from Monday's quadruple bogey to shoot a record-setting 2-under par 70 on the second day of the tournament. By so doing she captured her second straight individual state championship.

This matches the accomplishment of her sister, Elizabeth, who was the state Class B individual champion in girls golf in 1998 and 1999.

"Katherine played near flawless golf," said her uncle, Dan Stramel, who joined a group of family and friends following Katherine's title-winning round. "She hit 12 or 14 fairways on the par 4 and par 5 holes," he said, "and she birdied three of the four par 3 holes. It was a joy to watch.'

Katherine's round reached its thrilling conclusion on 18 when she sunk a tricky, slippery downhill putt for birdie.

Katherine's golfing success not only brought individual honors; it helped inspire an upsurge for the McCook team. After failing to qualify for state as a team in 2003, the Bison girls came back this year to finish second in state.

Helping McCook climb the ladder of success were Leslie Nelson, a junior; Justine Hager, a freshman; Minda Haas, a junior; and Kristy Osterman, a senior. Their improvement through the year is a credit to their hard work and the guidance of their coach, Randy Ryser.
