Governor's Mansion has great potential

Thursday, August 5, 2004

We were happy to hear that one of Frank B. Morrison's sons bought the former West Ward Elementary building, and now that we've seen what he plans to do with it, we're delighted.

Called the Governor's Mansion to honor Ralph Brooks, Ben Nelson and Morrison, former Nebraska governors, as well as Jack Gage, former Wyoming governor, and even U.S. Sen. George W. Norris, Jon Morrison's plans are impressive indeed.

Topped by a Greek-influenced entrance on the west, the old school building will feature hotel suites, and indoor and outdoor dining areas, as well as beautiful landscaping and a half-block parking area.

"Bringing history to life was my father's last dream. I believe this project brings history to life and will stand as a tribute to so many people who dedicated their lives to public service," Jon Morrison wrote about his project.

Located as it will be in a central McCook location, if it lives up to its promise, it will serve as a landmark for the community. Just across the street from Memorial Auditorium, it will offer both the amenities and space for gatherings of a wide range of sizes.

It will also fill a large void left by the closing of the Elks Club, which is up for sale. It's also heartening that architect Randy Stramel and engineers Gary Loop and Marty Kasl, all of whom now live in McCook but have McCook roots, are involved in the project.

That local involvement, along with Morrison's plan to create a non-profit corporation for the facility assures that it will be a true community effort.

It looks like the new will fill an important need in McCook as well as having the full support of the community. With careful planning and management, the Governor's Mansion should serve as a worthy centerpiece for years to come.
