Let campus grow north

Friday, July 30, 2004

As the campus grows why not to the north, towards the musuem and tennis courts, which could both be moved. Some alumni and citizens believe, the biggest concern Mr. Kelly had in donating the land to the city and college many years ago was to have as much space available to education as possible and as needed, mainly in the form of brick and mortar. And if the need arose for that specific agenda Mr. Kelly was thought to believe the park area should be the route. Although, as to not interfere with the pool further to the west would be sufficient and on down toward and/or into Bolles Canyon.

A few years ago such a plan was devised which created an oportunity for an amphitheater there. Underground drainage would be needed but not impossible. Again, we need to listen to the benefactors of the college and city living or not. The growth of MCC and the support of the community depends a lot on those people. And for those living to continue to see Weiland Field as part of the campus, with some remodeling would keep the original atmoshere for them to continue to think back on fondly, remember and support. Also, it has been a tremendous recruiting aid in the many people from area communities that come to watch the games, park around the college and stroll the campus which cannot help but grab their attention of a beautiful residential college atmosphere with many, many years of prestige, committment and beauty.

McCook needs to build and grow. But with thoughts in mind of keeping alive what was so prestigious to so many, our heritage, our landmarks. Far too many over the past years have dissappeared. The thoughts, work and success of keeping the past home of the YMCA and early college home where so many learned so much for so many decades is one of the finest attributes to McCook and it's attitude toward growth.
