Letter to the Editor

Look to future

Tuesday, May 4, 2004

Dear Editor,

I am directing my feelings to those of you who intend to vote no on the elementary school bond issue. We are very fortunate to live in a town we call home that is such a comfortable place to live and raise a family.

Our children's future depends on the education that will enable them to carry on a life that we have learned to take for granted. A good school system is also an asset when trying to attract new families to our town.

Our elementary schools are badly in need of repair. The cost of repairing these schools will be a waste of our tax dollars, as soon they will have to be completely replaced.

I think the bond issue presently proposed is a far better way to use tax dollars. None of us want to think of higher taxes, as the water situation is on all of our minds as we do not know exactly what that will entail.

The proposed increase in our taxes for the school bond is very minimal when you consider what it will build for our children and community. If your property is valued at $50,000, your increase would only be $12.40 per year; at $75,000 it would be $18.60 per year, and at $100,000, $24.80 per year.

This seems like a small price to pay when it comes to our children's education. I no longer have children in school. I do know that the taxpayers of the past helped financially to educate my children and possibly yours. I feel it is our turn to do the same for the young children in our community -- they are our future!

Please reconsider and vote yes for the school bond issue!
