Young child week

Tuesday, April 20, 2004

Dear Editor,

The week of April 18-24 is being observed nationally as the Week of the Young Child.

It is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. It was first observed in 1971, recognizing that the early childhood years (birth through age 8) lay the foundation for children's success in school and later life.

The southwest Nebraska Early Childhood Coalition is proud to sponsor the local observation of the Week of the Young Child.

The week's biggest event is Family Fun Night on Thursday, April 22, at the Community Building at the fairgrounds in McCook. It is co-sponsored by UN Cooperative Extension of Red Willow County.

Other Week of the Young Child events include "Backwards Day" on Monday, sidewalk chalk art on Tuesday, "Bubblemania" on Wednesday, "Purple Day" on thursday and "Pajama Day" on Friday.

The Southwest Nebraska Early Childhood Coalition invites everyone to join us in observing the Week of the Young Child, to acknowledge the importance of the early childhood years. For more information, call (308) 345-2609 or toll free, (888) 576-6777.

Sincerely,

Mary Bargen
