Bison golfers sixth at Grand Island

GRAND ISLAND -- When shooting a team score of 299 doesn't ensure a top-five finish for the McCook High boys golf team, it must mean two things.

One, the Bison were the only Class B team in an all-Class A field.

And two, it was a beautiful day for low scores.

Both of those were the case on Friday at Jackrabbit Run Golf Course (par 72) in Grand Island as McCook took home sixth place with a team score of 299 for the Grand Island Invitational.

"It was probably the best day for golfing in Grand Island that we could have had with the warm weather and little wind," McCook coach Ron Coleman said.

McCook, along with Omaha Creighton Prep, both led the 16-team, 82-player tournament by medaling three players.

Tyler Lawson placed the highest for McCook at sixth place with a 71 (33-38).

Bobby Gaulke medaled at ninth place with a 72 (35-37) and Brandon Crick rounded out the McCook trio with another round of 72 (33-39) to place him at 12th place.

Brett Chmiel posted an 84 for McCook while Kelly Maiden shot a 91.

"Our front nine scores, out of our top three, looked very good. We were sitting in very good position at the turn at one-over-par," Coleman said.

"Going into it I thought if we finished in the top five then that would place us where our good teams of the past have finished. I just feel that shooting sub-300, averaging better than 75, that's some good shooting.

"When you look at it three or four strokes off of placing in the top five, that's a very good showing.

"I'm pleased with the kids‚ performances. If they continue to play smart and stay away from big numbers then we'll do quite well."

McCook will host a dual against North Platte on Tuesday, and will participate in the Kearney Invitational Friday.
