Computer model keeps track of sewers

A new computer model detailing the city's sewer system will not only allow for better maintenance records, it also will allow the city to determine future needs as the city grows.

The model, presented to the McCook City Council by David Blau and Chris Miller of Miller & Associates, tracks each piece of the city's 47 miles of waste water lines.

In developing the program Miller & Associates was asked to determine the city's immediate needs to address better flow.

The company identified four areas in need of immediate attention. They include the line leading through the McCook Business Park, a line along U.S. Highway 83 and Ravenswood Road, and two smaller areas -- one under Federal Avenue and one to the south of the Chief Restaurant and West Casey's.

"This model will give us the opportunity to track the maintenance and repair records on every piece of sewer line," said Public Works Director Marty Conroy.

And once the city's new sewer camera arrives, city employees will be able to record the inside of every pipe in the city, download it into the model, and investigate any problems that may need to be addressed.

The Master Sewer Plan, including the sewer model, cost the city $20,000 and was a good investment, Controy said.

"It gives us a tremendous amount of data and the ability to see how to upgrade the system. It was well worth the money."
