Letter to the Editor

Hats off

Wednesday, February 18, 2004

Dear Editor,

Two weeks ago, a call came at 1503 over the air, concerning a fire. I was notified my home was on fire and rushed to the scene. My two sons were still in school. I stood by in disbelief and grief as I watched our home being destroyed.

At the time, I stood by, praying for the safety of the people involved in containing the fire and the surrounding neighbors.

The McCook Fire Department, Police Department, Nebraska Public Power District and Kinder Morgan all worked diligently together until our community was safe from a potentially dangerous situation. A big pat on the backs for an excellent job of teamwork.

The Red Cross representative, Barb Ostrum came immediately to my assistance, directing me to shelter and food until a new home was found.

Along with Barb Bortner and the employees at Community Hospital and countless others -- too many to mention here -- who stood by in assisting us in "starting over." My hat is off to everyone.

It's times like this, here in our tiny community, that makes me proud to be a part of "The Good Life." For here, a few weeks ago, I was devastated and homeless, and now we have a new home and it's all possible because of you. You know who you are. Those who helped me get back on my feet again; from encouraging words, hugs, prayers and "stuff," I thank you.

Most of all, I thank God for keeping my family and yours safe from what could have been so much worse. May He bless each and everyone who participated in "picking up the pieces" and starting over.

Sincerely,

Cheri Jumps & boys

McCook
