Letter to the Editor

Congratulations

Monday, February 2, 2004

Dear Editor,

My congratulations to you and your paper for printing the former city attorney firm's letter in full, and for this particular newsperson's view of the city's current dilemma regarding water, among other things.

I've experienced the anguish of a public official "trying with all my might" to serve in the interests of "the common good."

Once in awhile there are people moral and honest enough to publicly say what appears to be the truth in the matter at hand -- this can only begin the healing and constructive process leading to a course of action that will eventually alleviate a difficult issue, and McCook's water problem is truly one of those.

I salute your ex-law firm and an editor and a reporter who have the courage to lay some cold hard facts on the table!

Folks (all of you), whether you like the situation, dislike it, or just plain don't care -- you are all in this boat together, and you have only a limited time to "get together" and collectively solve this crisis [problem] for yourselves and your community.

McCook and surrounding communities are capable of resolving this problem in a typical midwest "professional" and neighborly manner -- I know, I grew up there. You all can, must, and will do this thing; just back off for a minute, take a deep breath, say a little prayer, and get back at it!!

With all good wishes for your success,

Dick Unger,

a former Red Willow and Frontier County person, and an ex- elected director of a California public

water agency,
