Letter to the Editor

Congratulations

Wednesday, January 14, 2004

Dear Editor,

As many Southwest Nebraska families and friends say goodbye to their loved ones leaving to do their part in protecting our Freedom, my heart goes out to all of them!

Do we really realize what sacrifices these soldiers are doing for us? What about their family and friends and how their lives will change?

All of this for you, me and every other American! I am so proud to say that I am an American! How traumatic it must be to leave the comfort of a home and family to go and serve America!

Yes, they did choose to serve our country. However, think about if there was not enough that have signed up and are prepared to serve us. Who would be doing this courageous duty?

It would be the young people that are the future of our country? It could be anyone's son or daughter 18, 19, 20... you get the point.

I am very thankful that these soldiers wanted to serve our country! They are my heroes! Everyone of them! And to them I want to say "CONGRATULATIONS!"   As they are TIME Magazine's Person of the Year for 2003, "THE AMERICAN SOLDIER."

How wonderful it is for the American soldier to hold this great honor! These soldiers are my nephew, your son or daughter, father, mother, grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew or cousin!

Please be sure to tell them congratulations! They greatly deserve this honor!

Oh yes, now the important part! A program has been started to write to the soldiers that will be arriving in Kuwait and then going on to their assignment in Iraq.

You mail a small package (shoebox size) of food items with a short introductory letter, including your address, then the soldiers are told if they want to be adopted and write a pen pal in the states to get a package and write the sender back. I understand that the soldiers that are now arriving as replacements will be there for 12 to 18 months.

This is a great project for families, churches, 4-H, Girl and Boy Scout Troops, school classes, or just individuals.

You may obtain more information at Budke Motors McCook, Scott's Grocery Hayes Center or my contacting me.

God bless you and the American Soldiers!
