Let's resolve to serve others this year

Wednesday, December 31, 2003

In this great big world, it's easy to get overwhelmed. So many people. So many ideas. How are we ever going to get along?

Troubling thoughts abound as we enter the New Year of 2004 ... especially when you contemplate the continued terrorist killing of American troops in Iraq and the tragic devastation of disasters such as the earthquake in Iran.

Still -- here at home in the Heartland of America -- we can make a difference. It starts in our hearts. While we may not be able to change the world, we can change ourselves, and, in so doing, light the candle of hope for a world which may not be perfect, but at least can be better because of our actions.

So, today and tomorrow, on the last day of 2003 and the first day of 2004, let's join in making the most important resolution of all. Let's promise, together, that we will live our lives in service to others and in honor of God.

Too churchy for you? Too lecture-like? Please don't take it that way. All we are trying to do is pass along the guiding principles of the world's great religions. First, live in awe of a higher power ... the greatness that surpasses human understanding. And, second, treat others with the same concern and respect that you deserve yourself.

Simple, right? Well, it should be, but it seems as if we have a whale of a time getting it accomplished. We're so busy, and things can get so confusing. There are bills to pay and crises to face, most especially the sickness and death of our loved ones.

But we must be strong and steadfast. We must carry on. Because, the miracle of life is that each of us is important. We do make a difference. It's just a matter of whether that difference is helpful or hurtful ... uplifting or downgrading.

The best illustration of doing our part is the lighting of a candle. One candle -- our candle -- spreads a little light. But, even more important, if the brightness of our lives inspires others, the light spreads, illuminating the world with faith ... with hope ... with charity.

Let's do our part to make Planet Earth a better place in 2004. Let's resolve to live in service to others and in honor of God. We have a long way to go, but, together, with our actions, we can help light up the world.
