Area continues tradition of football power

Tuesday, November 11, 2003

For football fans -- especially those from Southwest Nebraska -- it would be hard to find a day more perfect for football than Monday, November 10, 2003.

On that magnificent afternoon and evening, four teams from the southwest section of the state captured victories to qualify for the state semi-finals.

Carrying the area's colors into the next to final round will be McCook in Class B, Chase County of Imperial in Class C-1, Cambridge in class C-2 and Eustis-Farnam in Class D-1.

An impressive showing, especially when you add Herndon, which earlier in the week qualified for the six-man finals in the Beavers' final year as a separate high school district.

All together, that adds up to five area teams still alive in the playoffs, a total which represents 20 percent of the high school teams that play football in Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas. Another five teams from the area -- including Arapahoe which was defeated Monday -- made it to the playoffs.

The record of success is a credit to all associated with high school football in this area. All of us pull for our home teams, but we also share pride in the success of the programs in neighboring communities.

Go Bison! Go Longhorns! Go Trojans! Go Knights! Go Beavers! The people of the Golden Plains are proud of your accomplishments to date, and wish you the best in your quest for state football supremacy.
