Golden Plains are living up to that name

Thursday, October 23, 2003

Historically speaking, the past few days have been the warmest on record in McCook, topping the all-time temperature charts for Oct. 19, Oct. 21 and Oct. 22.

During the stretch of summer-like days, the temperature readings rose to 93 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday, Oct. 19; 91 degrees on Tuesday, Oct.21; and 90 degrees on Wednesday, Oct. 22. The previous all-time temperature records were 90 degrees on Oct. 19; 89 degrees on Oct. 21; and 85 degrees on Oct. 22.

Today could also be a hot one, with temperatures of up to 83 degrees in the forecast. After that, the weather service is predicting temperatures will return to more normal levels for late October, with high temperatures in the 50s and 60s forecast for the weekend.

As the weather changes -- hopefully bringing some moisture along with the cooler temperatures -- let's pause for a few moments to celebrate the glory of this magnificent stretch of weather in the Golden Plains.

Never, ever, has the name Golden Plains been more appropriate than it has been in the first three weeks of October. As the leaves of trees turned from green to autumn colors, golden hues predominated, with colors ranging from brilliant yellows to subtle shades of old gold.

On the countryside, the golden leaves of the trees joined with golden-colored corn stalks to create a panorama of autumn grandeur. And, adding an occasional colorful contrast on our autumn journeys, were the bright reds of fire bushes, the stark crimson of sumac plants and the striking reds and purples of fruit trees as they progressed toward winter dormancy.

Ahh, yes! So beautiful ... and so pleasant.

All of those spending time outdoors during the past few days -- such as farmers, laborers, golfers, gardeners, sportsmen and walkers -- shed their jackets in the daylight hours, but still broke into a sweat when exerting themselves.

No question about it. These past few days have been spectacular, rising to historic levels, temperature-wise, and reaching a grand scale of colorful beauty from a scenic standpoint.

As is always the case -- particularly in the Heartland of America -- weather changes are coming. But, don't despair. With the changes will come new adventures in weather-watching, one of the on-going benefits -- and challenges -- of living in the Golden Plains.
