Ramifications

Thursday, September 18, 2003

Dear Editor,

The removal of the stone with the Ten Commandments from the court house has a lot more ramifications than just the separation of church and state. The Ten Commandments are more than the law. They are instructions for a set of ethics and morality. We can remove the stone with the Ten Commandments from the courthouse, but if we remove ethics and morality from the courthouse, then we will never be able to pass enough laws to maintain any semblance of civility within our country.

If we remove ethics and morality from the court house, if we remove ethics and morality from the Legislature, if we remove ethics and morality from the police force, and if we do not keep ethics and morality in mind when we elect our leaders, then it will not matter how many laws we make, it will not matter how many prisons we build, it will not matter how many terrorists we subdue, the fabric of our society will crumble from within.

The freedom that we have in this country is very precious, but it is also very fragile.

If we refuse to be responsible for our actions and reactions, then we will lose the freedom to make our own decisions.

Freedom demands responsibility, and if we refuse to accept those responsibilities, then we most certainly will lose our freedoms.

David Franke, Herndon
