Mildred E. Hauxwell

Mildred Wing Hauxwell, 98, passed away at Linden Court in North Platte on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003.

She was born Nov. 7, 1904, at Harvard to Harry and Ella (Peterson) Wing. When two years old, she moved with her parents to a farm near Indianola, where she spent her childhood. She attended the Indianola school and graduated with the class of 1922.

After high school, Mildred attended Cotner College at Bethany, and earned credits from the University of Colorado and Kearney State College. She taught in a rural school for two years and in the Indianola elementary school for seven years.

On Aug. 22, 1934, she married Lawrence Hauxwell. Initially, they resided in Danbury and Indianola where Lawrence taught school. They moved to a farm northwest of Indianola in 1942. During this time Mildred served with her husband as they pastored to the Bartley Christian Church for twenty two years.

In 1969, with Lawrence's failing health, they moved to McCook where Lawrence passed away a year later. Mildred spent her remaining days sharing her home in McCook with her daughter until her health required transfer to a nursing home for her final days.

Mildred was baptized into Christ in the Indianola Church of Christ in 1917 at the age of 13. She was honored this past year as the oldest surviving member of the Indianola Church of Christ at the commemoration of their 100th anniversary, Mildred was an active member of the Indianola Church of Christ Missionary Society, the McCook Federated Woman's Club, and the McCook Community Hospital Auxiliary. She was a 50 year member of the Red Willow Ladies Extension Club, and a 60 year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She served as Chairman of the Red Willow County Extension and as Worthy Matron of Eastern Star.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and brother, Robert Wing of Hastings as well as many other relatives and close friends.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Gerald and Ingrid of Port Angeles, Wash.; Donald and Sonja of Cambridge, Idaho; a daughter, Dorothy of McCook; two grandchildren, Monica and Clinton; three great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; and other relatives and friends.

Mildred loved people and was most happy when she was surrounded by family and friends. Her departure is a loss for all who knew and loved her.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral services will be Monday, Jan. 27, at 1:30 p.m. in the Indianola Church of Christ with the Rev. Clark Bates, Jerry Beckenhauer, and Dale Heimer officiating. Interment will be at the Indianola Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday 2-8 p.m.
