Chasing away the summer doldrums

The residents of McCook seem to live by the old adage, "Only boring people get bored." In honor of Anti-Boredom month, McCookites sound off as to how they keep the summer doldrums away.

While Kaylee Hendrickson and Jacob Anderson are ready to return to school, it's not because they are bored. The cousins enjoy the small pleasures of the summer including biking, softball, swimming and time with friends.

However with all these summer activities for children, comes a hectic schedule for parents. Shirley Chmiel, the mother of four, said that between the golf, basketball and baseball, she has no time for boredom. "I have four kids in sports," Chmiel said, "that alone is enough to keep me busy." Karen Hiatt echoes her co-worker's sentiments. Hiatt, who just returned from her daughter's softball tournament in North Platte, has a short respite from sports, but she knows her time is limited. "Now that softball is over I might get bored," Hiatt said, "but then swim team starts."

Kaylee Henrickson, 10, and Jacob Anderson, 12, entertain themselves with a ride around town.

When in doubt or in this case-when bored-shop. While their aunt and uncle, Judy and Laney Leitner, are at work, the Pomeroy girls who are visiting from Denver with their mother go shopping for a girl's best friend - jewelry. All three girls agree that shopping downtown McCook is the best way to stay fashionably entertained. Perhaps the most meaningful way to keep boredom away is to spend time with loved ones. Marie Owen only has to think about her newest granddaughter, Zoe Elise, to keep any monotony away. Owen just returned from Texas from visiting her youngest Valerie's first baby who was born on March 3rd. Meeting soon-to-be family members kept Joyce Dore from experiencing any lulls. Dore recently returned from Seattle where she met her future daughter-in-law.

So when the pace slows down and you're contemplating complaining about the lack of activities to keep you stimulated, remember to do your part to honor July as Anti-Boredom month.
