Sheriff's office building to get new roof

Wednesday, February 26, 2003

Red Willow County commissioners OK'd a new sprayed-on foam roof for the sheriff's office building Tuesday and started the search for a new pickup for the county's noxious weed department.

Commissioners accepted a $14,015.80 bid from Houlden Contracting of Cambridge to replace the rubber-and-rock roof on the sheriff's office building. Houlden's was the only bid commissioners received after they advertised for a sprayed-on polyurethane foam roofing system.

Houlden will remove the existing 3,674-square-foot roof to the deck and install new flashing with a downspout. The two-inch layer of polyurethane foam that will cover the roofs of the building, garage and two porches and seal air conditioning and ventilation equipment provides an R14 insulation value. The top coat will be an 85 percent-reflective bright white.

Commissioner Steve Downer said he was impressed with the energy advantages associated with an SPF roof.

Material and labor will carry a 12-year, 100 percent guarantee. Owner Brad Houlden told commissioners, "Basically, the building is yours, the roof is mine. If anything goes wrong, I fix it." Houlden said, "You're never going to have to throw that roof away."

Commissioners told weed supervisor Bill Elliott to start the search for a replacement for his 3/4-ton 1985 Chevy pickup.

Commission chairman Earl McNutt questioned the value of using the pickup for a trade-in, saying it could be used on the fairgrounds for in-town use only.

The pickup will be used by the weed district and the household waste collection program, McNutt said, so its cost can be shared by the two programs.

In other action, commissioners:

- Approved the continuation of the $30,000 bond for Ona Malleck, clerk/treasurer for Indianola. traff - Discussed with county treasurer Marleen Garcia and Sheriff Gene Mahon the activities and quarterly cash expenditure reports required for a juvenile service grant.

- Approved a tax exemption for a vehicle owned by Mid-Nebraska Community Action.

- Reviewed the county boundaries on a map developed by the U.S. Census Bureau.

- Filed the sheriff's monthly revenue report.
