Bison duo dominate with two Beatrice mat championships
(High School Sports ~ 01/09/24)
BEATRICE, Neb. —McCook’s Tristan Campbell took 16-3 Carter Trimble behind the woodshed for a 7-1 beating in Saturday’s Beatrice Invitational 144-pound title match. The returning sophomore state qualifier finished a dominating performance where he pinned one foe to go with 16-0 and 18-1 major decision. Trimble was his best challenger from Marysville, Kan. “Tristan beat a pretty good wrestler in the finals,” coach Nick Umscheid confirmed. Sophomore classmate Spencer Steinbeck also captured the 285-pound title with four consecutive pins. Steinbeck’s finale was against host Takeo Glynn of Beatrice who grappled with him until eight seconds remained in their title match. Yet Steinbeck kept grinding to finish his fourth consecutive pin on this day. The Bison heavyweight’s 28 points topped a team total of 91 which earned eighth among 11 full teams competing. McCook took on a field featuring three Omaha schools (Creighton Prep, South, Gross) besides Gretna East and Crete. “We got to see some good teams from the eastern part of the state and that’s why we go to the Beatrice tournament,” Umscheid said. “The other wrestlers had both some good matches and some matches they wish would have ended differently.” Junior Quentin Terry’s top five placing at 215 included a pin of 14-win Ever Ayala from Lexington. Freshman Tyce Hammerlun shook off a pair of early defeats and finished strong, 14-4, in his seventh-place match at 120 pounds. McCook High wrestling results: Teams: 1. Beatrice 238.5, 2. Bison trio of girls reach top three; Rawlins Buff takes second
(High School Sports ~ 01/09/24)
NORTON, Kan. — McCook High’s three wrestling girls all earned top three places at the J.R. Durham Invitational on Saturday. The results are impressive considering McCook was mainly wrestling Kansas teams who’ve had high school programs for several years. Sophomore Peyton Cock’s powering the Bison this winter with her 18-8 record. Cock’s only loss last weeekend was a semifinal match vs. 23-2 Kylee Hodges from Oakley, Kan. Peyton recovered for two more wins including a 4:28 pin of Lexington’s Sadie Rodriguez (15-6 record) in their third-place match. Teammate Meka Daub was brilliant as the Bison 155-pounder scored five pins during this tournament. Her best based on records was 3:16 over 13-6 Ashlyn Pazdernik from Scott City, Kan. Top five team scores among among 18 competing in the J.R. Durham Invitational on Saturday: 1. Lexington 142, 2. Colby (Kan.) 138, 3. Oakley (Kan.) 98, 4. Norton 76, 5. North Platte 73; 12.
