Couple asks for road reclassification
(Local News ~ 02/24/15)
McCOOK, Neb. -- A rural Red Willow County couple wants county commissioners to reclassify a "Minimum Maintenance" road northwest of McCook so that they can build a new home along it. Commissioner Earl McNutt told Bill McConville during the commissioners' weekly meeting Monday morning that "to give you any kind of a road through that hill" north on Road 721/Drive 381, neighbors' pasture fences will have to be moved, the existing road's banks will have to be cut down and REA poles moved and/or replaced with taller ones.. ...

(Local News ~ 02/24/15)
McCOOK, Neb. -- The City of McCook is hoping to add a few years in between sales tax renewal efforts, as well as loosen up restrictions on how the approximately $2.6 million in annual revenue is spent. City leaders have communicated they intend to ask voters to extend the sunset of the sales tax from 10 years to 15 years during a special election tentatively scheduled for May 12. They would also like to combine the separate one percent and half percent taxes into a single 1.5 percent tax...

No ringing endorsement for new phone system
(Local News ~ 02/24/15)
McCOOK, Neb. -- Officials in the Red Willow County courthouse don't seem to be convinced that newer is better. They want a new phone system that works as well as their old system, or they want the old system back. Or cell phones. Indeed, one official told county commissioners during their weekly meeting Monday morning that he has unhooked the new gray phone and plugged the old white one back in. Another asked commissioners for cell phones for his office...

Can we be too careful when it comes to allergies?
(Editorial ~ 02/24/15)
Cleanliness is next to godliness, right? They say plumbers have probably done as much as doctors to extend modern life spans, but can cleanliness go too far? According to the so-called hygiene hypotheses, allergies and autoimmune disorders are caused by the ultra-sterile environment made possible by antibacterial soap, disinfectants and other common cleansers...

Sales tax scrooge?
(Letter to the Editor ~ 02/24/15)
I read the story in the McCook Gazette concerning renewing the one and one-half-cent sales tax. City manager Nate Schneider stated that if we don't approve the sales tax, he would probably have to raise property taxes to the maximum allowed by law. Let's be honest, those who own homes and other real estate can afford a property tax hike. Its the working poor who supplement our property tax by paying the sales tax. They are the ones who do not benefit from this sales tax...

Vote NO on sales tax extension
(Column ~ 02/24/15)
It is the season to increase taxes -- yet another time. The McCook City Council is holding meetings to justify the renewal of McCook's local option sales tax. In a related, but sinister move, they also want to extend the sunset period from 10 to 15 years. Evidently it is inconvenient to have to keep justifying what I see as an unnecessary burdensome tax...
