In 1881, Southwest Nebraska was faced with a real crisis. The region had lured thousands of settlers from the East, which had been suffering from poor economic times following the great Civil War. For some years the region, with timely rains, had lived up to its backers' claims as "The Land of Milk and Honey." There are still unanswered questions and Nebraska is far from off the hook, but a special master's finding is good news for those of us who live along the Republican River in Southwest Nebraska. SIDNEY, Nebraska -- The Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has approved the increased density of oil wells in three 40-acre tracts in Hitchcock County. Bill Sydow, director of the oil and gas commission, said the approval of Berexco Inc.'s increased density request will allow Berexco to protect its oil reserve from drilling in Kansas, where wells are allowed to be placed much closer together than in Nebraska...
