  • I am always saying, "Get off the problem and get to the solution."

    We all make mistakes. Identify the problem, then quit complaining about it and get on with the solution.

    If kids know this they can move on, too.

  • Get to the solution, yes. But I think kids also need some validation and empathy. Let's face it--sometimes parents can be a little on the crazy side with all of the millions of things we juggle every day. When things start getting out of control, we have to take a moment to take a deep breath, hug our kids and say, "I'm sorry we've had a tough day. How can we make it better?" "Get off the problem" is another way of saying "no excuses." But for our kids, sometimes the excuses seem insurmountable without an adult voice to say, "I know what you mean. I went through this once, too. Here's what helped." Then after they get a hug we get to kick them in the pants and say, "Now get to work." ;)
