The boys are with him...

Posted Friday, July 27, 2007, at 6:11 PM

There are some definite benefits to being the mom in an all boy household, like not having to share mirror space for hair and make-up, or having an excuse to see the movie Transformers. And then there are the moments when I am so baffled (and, yes, I admit--amused) by their behavior that I have to remind myself that I did in fact give birth to these three boys.

Recently, our family went through Bear Country USA in South Dakota. It's an amazing drive-through animal park in which many of the animals will walk right next to your vehicle. I used my typical enthusiastic mom voice to point out the different attractions. "Look, kids! Do you see that reindeer?"

My three year-old's earnest response was, "Can we shoot him?"

I frowned at my snickering husband and then answered, "No, sweetie. We can't shoot him." The same exchange occurred when I pointed out the arctic wolves, the dall sheep, and the black bears. By the time we went saw the mountain lions and I again had to explain "No, we do not shoot ANY of the animals in the park," I told my husband that he is clearly his father's son. Then all the boys in the vehicle engaged in a lengthy, giggly discussion about the bodily functions of all the animals, which makes me wonder if we couldn't just save the $33 fees to get in the park and just let the boys amuse themselves with poo poo jokes for an hour.

Oh well. Other than that South Dakota was an amazing trip. Truly the perfect getaway for family fun. Not too bad of a drive from McCook, and many bargains for lodging and amusement.

Hi Lori,

Makes you wonder when the gene for hunting for one's food collides with the environmental gene! And I wonder

which parent kindled "Can we shoot

it?" Possibly the Hinze family? Oh,

well, get used to it - we're going to have to encourage living together!
