Pumpkin Jacket

Posted Wednesday, October 17, 2012, at 8:54 PM

I had a memorable little encounter this past weekend. We were going into a store and there was father and daughter sitting on a bench. I figured they were waiting for mom. The Hubby and I were the only ones walking into the entry way at the time.

As we walked closer, the dad said 'tell her' to his daughter. She was a little bit of a thing and was maybe four or five years old. Since I was the only 'her' in the vicinity, I stopped, looked at her and bent over a little bit to come to her eye level.

She said, "I really like your pumpkin jacket."

I told her thank you and smiled at her. She smiled back only the way a shy little one can. When we were walking in the store, the dad said to her, ''that was a nice thing to say."

It made my day. Granted the little one liked my Halloween themed jacket, with the pumpkins and the candy corn colored sparkly sequins. But more importantly, her dad encouraged his daughter to say something nice and then reinforced the point afterward.

I was glad to be able to be a play a small part in a positive parenting moment just by wearing my pumpkin jacket.

I love it! Reminds me of something I read from Dr. Kevin Leman. He says it's always character that counts. We don't praise the victories, we praise the effort and positive attitude that go into them. I think building up others is a skill that will benefit her for years to come.
