  • There are a very few of the WWII/CCC veterans remaining.

Mobilization after Pearl Harbor was hastened immeasurably because the country had three-million men in CCC camps trained in military lifestyle, drill, response to command in marching units and trained to work as teams under challenging conditions.

In combat, these "old men" could organize digging, timbering, reinforcing teams to create bunkers, earthern fortifications and multi-man foxholes.

Their strong moral sense of responsibility and duty carried on throughout and after WWII.

Much of that morality and strength can be found in our young people and the career military serving today.

Now, if we can just carry it forward with voluntary service. Every young person devoting two years to their community, county, state and nation.

Learning to work together as a team, performing rigorous physical labor combined with mental acuity, ignoring hardship and physical discomfort.

A winter in a half-dugout "soddie" would not hurt any of today's urban youth.

Enduring in order to understand the strength of our "greatest generation."
