From Curtis to Wauneta to Trenton and Arapahoe, all the familiar basketball opening-night foes are tipping off their 2021-22 seasons tonight.

The Cambridge Trojans and Hitchcock County Falcons feature two schools resuming from super fall seasons.

Hitchcock County’s boys reached the historic first D-1 state football semifinal, while Cambridge’s girls qualified for D-1 state volleyball in Lincoln last month.

Both have Top 10 rankings along with potential state tourneys in their sights this winter.

The Southwest Roughriders debut in Bartley tonight where traditional opening foe Medicine Valley visits.

Med Valley returns brothers Hayden and Sebastian Kramer who wre part of a team only one win from reaching the state tourney last season.

Southwest’s girls feature many same players from a strong volleyball squad, but expect sophomore Stella Heapy and Med Valley to deliver a scrappy challenge.

The Chase County Longhorns host McCook Friday evening. But first, the Longhorns get a good warm-up test. Both Chase teams visit Cozad tonight where they’ll take on the Southwest Conference Haymakers.

Rivals Wauneta-Palisade and Wallace also tangle tonight in a varsity doubleheader at Wauneta.

The Arapahoe Warriors host Overton which completes tonight’s basketball slate.

However, wrestlers also are debuting in a dual meet at Cambridge. Both returning D-1 state runner-up Southwest and Arapahoe are set to compete.

Hitchcock County, Dundy County-Stratton, Wauneta-Palisade and Medicine Valley are all wrestling in the Maxwell Invitational today set to start at 2 p.m.
