MNB earns top four seed for B-6 tourney
MINDEN, Neb. — It’s time to make a fruit stand against Melons from Gothenburg when McCook National Bank arrives at next week’s B-6 area tournament.
The MNB Seniors are seeded fourth and Gothenburg No. 5 , so these will rivals will collide in Friday’s B-6 opener on No. 1 Minden’s diamond.
First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
The Melons (8-11 record) split with MNB (9-13) during two regular-season games. McCook romped to a 10-2 win on June 3, but Gothenburg gained 4-1 revenge during their June 29 rematch in G-Burg.
Whoever wins game three will advance to play either No. 1 Minden (18-4) or No. 8 St. Paul (4-17) at 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 24.
The other two Friday openers feature No. 2 Broken Bow (15-8-1) vs. No. 7 Cozad (4-12) at 5 p.m. and No. 3 Doniphan -Trumbull (5-5) vs. No. 6 Holdrege (5-14) at 8 p.m.
A first-round loss would drop MNB into Saturday’s 11 a.m. survival contest vs. Minden or St. Paul.
The B-6 tourney’s set to continue Sunday, July 25; where games are scheduled at 2, 6 and 8 p.m.
Those final four survivors would play 5 and 8 p.m. games on Monday, July 26.
The first B-6 title game is set for Tuesday, July 27 at 5 p.m. with a second title game following if needed.
McCook’s Legion Post 203 Seniors have beaten Cozad, Holdrege twice but lost two to Minden and one at Broken Bow,
The Post 203 team didn’t play either Doniphan-Trumbull or St. Paul.
Of course, the B-6 champ qualifies for Class B state tournament play in Waverly starting Saturday, July 31.
