McCOOK, Neb. — Alfreda Katherine Colling, age 88, of McCook, passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020, at the Good Samaritan Society Colonial Villa in Alma, Neb.

She was born on the family farm near Dresden, Kan., on Nov. 5, 1931, to Bernard “Ben” and Philomena “Minnie” (Kruse) Ritter. Alfreda was the eighth of 11 children in her family and grew up on the family farm west of Dresden. She attended school in Leoville, Kan.

After school she moved to McCook and worked at St. Catherine’s Hospital as a nurse’s aide. On Nov. 22, 1955, Alfreda was united in marriage to Richard Colling at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Leoville. To this union they became parents to one son, Thomas.

Her husband, Richard, worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad, so the family lived in Aurora, Ill., from 1955-1974. From there they moved to St. Paul, Minn., until 1984. Then went on to Galesburg, lll., and lived there from 1984-1990. They finally returned back to McCook in 1990. They enjoyed being back home and close to family. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Alter Society. One of her hobbies was to make rosaries.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard; son, Thomas; and six brothers, Cletus, Raymond, Seraphim, Francis, Sylvester and Dennis.

Alfreda is survived by four siblings, Florence Thompson of Hoxie, Kan., Delores Ritter of Maryknoll, N.Y., Bernadine Spresser of Leoville, and Victor Ritter of Oberlin, Kan.; along with many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

Visitation will be at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2020, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Rosary will be recited at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church at 7 p.m., with Father Paul Colling officiating.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in McCook on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Leoville at 2 p.m.
